Documentation for EDC 159-class landcover, 1 km resolution

This dataset is taken from the "1990 Conterminous U. S. Land Cover Characteristics Data Set" CDROM distributed by the USGS Eros Data Center (EDC). The landcover characteristics are derived from the classification of 1990 AVHRR time series data, with post classification refinement based on topography, climate, soils, and ecoregions.

The README file which accompanied the CDROM provides additional details about the dataset.

The data are formatted as a raster image containing 2889 lines of 4587 samples each.

The data resolution is 1 km.

The data are in the Lambert azimuthal equal area projection being used by EDC for a series of 1 km datasets covering the conterminous United States. The projection parameters are as follows:

	Projection units:	meters
Spheroid: sphere of radius 6,370,997 meters
	Central longitude:	-100 deg (W)
	Central latitude:	45 deg N
	False easting: 0
	False northing: 0

The landcover classes are defined in the file lcc159.att

A color palatte for displaying the classes is in file lcc159.pal
